Mike focuses his practice on estate planning, which includes preparing trusts, wills, powers of attorney, and other documents. He also handles complex commercial and civil litigation, probate and trust litigation, insurance defense, and civil cases.
Mike earned his Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude, in Political Science and Economics in 1986. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law in 1989, graduating Cum Laude.
Mike has an "AV" rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is certified to practice law before State and Federal Courts. In June 2010, he completed The Probate and Estate Planning Certificate of Completion through The Institute of Continuing Legal Education, co-sponsored by the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
Mike has authored and published various articles for legal newsletter, and is a lecturer at seminars and client meetings.
Heather graduated from the University of Michigan with High Distinction in 1999 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Grand Traverse Antrim Leelanau County Bar Association (including the Women Lawyers Association), and the University of Michigan Alumni Association.
In May 2010, Heather completed The Probate and Estate Planning Certificate of Completion through the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, co-sponsored by the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
Heather volunteers her legal services pro bono at the Women's Resource Center through her affiliation with the Women Lawyers Association. She is also a member of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce and the Almira Township Planning Commission.
Todd is an experienced trial attorney and business counselor, focusing on agriculture law, commercial disputes, insurance coverage and defense, construction law, tort litigation, governmental law, and mediation. He has extensive trial and litigation experience in both federal and state courts across Michigan and assists out-of-state law firms and their clients with the intricacies of practicing law in Michigan courts.
Todd has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education and a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University. He obtained his Doctor Jurisprudence in 1993 from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Loretta has more than 25 years of legal experience, primarily working in the areas of estate planning and probate law. She assists Michael Swogger and Heather Bruce with the day-to-day operations of their estate planning and probate practice.
Courtney received her Bachelors of Arts in 2010 from the University of Michigan and graduated from Suffolk University Law School with a Juris Doctorate degree in 2013. Her practice areas include real estate planning, estate administration, insurance defense, and general civil litigation.
John J. Rizzo III attended college at the University of Miami. He spent his first year of law school at Emory University School of Law. He finished his legal degree at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law. John focuses his practice on government benefits, including Medicaid, Medicare, Veteran’s Benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance, and Supplemental Security Income.
Kim grew up in Cadillac, Michigan and moved to Traverse City in 1993. She started at the firm in November of 2015. Kim is our receptionist and, most likely, the first person you would meet upon entering our office.
